Team India is set to begin its two-Test series against Sri Lanka on August 15, with the opening match scheduled to be played in Galle. Captain Shubman Gill, who is enjoying an excellent run of form, has a major opportunity to create history in the World Test Championship (WTC).
Gill is just 157 runs away from a milestone that no Indian batter has achieved in WTC history. The India captain has scored 2,843 runs in 40 WTC matches so far. If he manages to score another 157 runs across the two Tests against Sri Lanka, he will complete 3,000 runs and become the first Indian batter to reach the mark in the competition.
Gill currently tops the list of Indian run-scorers in WTC history. Rishabh Pant is second with 2,780 runs from 71 innings in 40 matches, while former India captain Rohit Sharma ended his WTC career with 2,716 runs from 40 matches.
England’s Joe Root remains the leading run-scorer in the history of the World Test Championship. Root has accumulated 6,651 runs in 77 matches and continues to dominate the all-time WTC batting charts.
Gill also has another significant milestone in sight during the ongoing 2025-27 WTC cycle. Since taking over as captain, he has scored 950 runs in eight matches. Another 50 runs would take him to 1,000 runs in a single WTC cycle, making him the first Indian captain to achieve the feat.
With two Tests against Sri Lanka on the schedule, Gill has the chance to enter the record books twice. His batting form will be closely watched when India begin their campaign in Galle.
