Calls are increasing for Indian educationist Sonam Wangchuk to conclude his indefinite hunger strike due to concerns about his health. The 59-year-old, on salt water for 19 days, has lost 9.1kg and is in significant pain. The Delhi High Court will hear a petition for urgent medical intervention, warning that he may die within two days. Wangchuk is protesting for educational reforms via the Cockroach Janta Party, an online satirical movement. Protesters are calling for the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan after a crucial entrance exam for future doctors was cancelled due to a paper leak.
They demand he take moral responsibility for the situation. Pradhan, however, has labeled the protesters as disruptive elements and the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not responded to their demands. Wangchuk, popularly known as “Sonam sir,” is a prominent figure from Ladakh, recognized internationally for his work, including winning the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2018. He inspired the hit film Three Idiots and recently appeared on Kaun Banega Crorepati. His deteriorating health has raised concerns among supporters, leading opposition leaders, activists, and Bollywood personalities to urge him to end his fast.
