Serious allegations of sexual assault have been raised against a young cricketer who has made a name for himself on the cricket field. On Tuesday, West Bengal Police arrested the Delhi Capitals wicketkeeper-batsman on charges of establishing physical relations after promising marriage, issuing criminal threats, and storing visuals of private moments.
The arrested cricketer is Bengal’s wicketkeeper-batsman Abhishek Porel. According to police, the 23-year-old Porel was formally arrested after being interrogated. After a medical examination, the accused was produced in the Chinsurah court.
As per the complaint filed at the Mogra police station, Porel had established physical relations with the woman after promising marriage following their meeting in 2023. The complaint also states that discussions about their marriage had later taken place between the two families.
Following this, the woman accused Porel of sexual assault and issuing criminal threats. The case also includes allegations that he stored visuals of private moments and threatened to make them public.
According to the complaint, on April 2, 2026, in Delhi, the woman was allegedly physically assaulted and confined. It is also alleged that she was deprived of food, which later required medical treatment. However, the allegations are yet to be proven in court.
Alleging police inaction in the investigation, the woman approached the Calcutta High Court. In court, the complainant also alleged that she was threatened with the release of private visuals.
During the hearing of this petition, on July 14, Justice Saugata Bhattacharya of the Calcutta High Court directed police to continue operations to arrest Porel and another accused. The court also ordered the seizure of electronic devices to prevent the circulation of private visuals related to the complainant.
Police have already seized a pen drive and sent it for forensic examination. The police are also continuing their investigation into other information and allegations related to the case.
It is worth mentioning that Abhishek Porel is a well-known face in Bengal cricket. Porel made his first-class debut for Bengal in the 2021-22 season and later got an opportunity with the India ‘A’ team. The cricketer has been playing in the IPL with Delhi Capitals since 2023.
Meanwhile, Porel had earlier denied the allegations. The truth of the allegations will be determined through the investigation of the case and subsequent legal proceedings.
