Former India skipper Bhaichung Bhutia has lauded the Durand Cup’s increasing reach ahead of the 2026 edition, expressing his desire to see a group-stage game hosted in Siliguri.
Bhutia, who has been a prominent figure in Indian football, highlighted the tournament’s rich legacy and called it one of the most respected competitions in the sport. He also encouraged organisers to continue taking the historic tournament to different cities across the country.
Speaking before the 135th Durand Cup, the former captain said the competition deserves widespread backing from top clubs and praised the decision to expand its presence across various venues.

The football icon from the region believes Siliguri has a strong football culture and should get the opportunity to host a Durand Cup fixture, especially during the group stage.
“Taking the tournament to different places is a great move because the Durand Cup is the second-oldest football tournament in the world and holds immense prestige. I hope, with the support of the Bengal Government, all the major clubs participate. We also grew up playing in this historic competition. I would request that one of the Durand Cup group-stage matches be organised in Siliguri,” Bhutia said.
Durand Cup 2026 set to begin with a blockbuster Kolkata Derby
The 135th edition of the Durand Cup is scheduled to kick off on July 25 with a high-voltage Kolkata Derby featuring arch-rivals Mohun Bagan Super Giant and East Bengal FC.
The prestigious month-long competition will continue until August 23, with 24 teams competing across six groups in five host cities — Kolkata, Ranchi, Imphal, Shillong and Guwahati.
Kolkata, the tournament’s home venue since 2019, will host the opening fixture along with matches from Groups A and B. The city will also stage two quarterfinals, the first semifinal and the grand final. Meanwhile, the other host cities will play a key role in expanding the tournament’s reach and strengthening its presence across India.
