The Assam Pradesh unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today organised a solemn tribute programme at its state headquarters to commemorate the death anniversary of former Prime Minister and Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
BJP Assam Pradesh State President and Member of Parliament from the Darrang-Udalguri Lok Sabha constituency, Dilip Saikia, paid floral tribute to the portrait of the former Prime Minister and offered his homage on the occasion.
Recalling the towering BJP leader, Saikia said Atal Bihari Vajpayee was not merely a political leader, but a multifaceted personality who distinguished himself as a poet, litterateur and accomplished journalist. Through his life and work, Vajpayee gave expression to his philosophy, humanist outlook and profound commitment to the nation.
Saikia said that Vajpayee, one of the founding architects and guiding lights of the Bharatiya Janata Party, devoted his entire life to the service of the nation. He was particularly attentive and sensitive to the concerns of Assam and the North-Eastern region, he said. During the prolonged Assam Movement, Vajpayee had visited Assam and extended his support to the movement’s participants. He also sought to draw national attention to the issues underlying the movement by raising them in Parliament, Saikia said.
Highlighting Vajpayee’s contribution to the development of the North-East and the welfare of indigenous communities, Saikia said that it was during Vajpayee’s tenure that a separate Department of Tribal Affairs was established to focus on the welfare of tribal communities.
He also recalled the creation of the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) to give focused impetus to the development of the North-Eastern states. Vajpayee, Saikia observed, laid the foundation for transformative infrastructure development across the country, including through the Golden Quadrilateral project, which sought to strengthen connectivity from Kashmir to Kanyakumari and from the North-East to Gujarat.
The former Prime Minister also demonstrated his far-sighted vision through ambitious initiatives such as the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and the National Rural Health Mission, among several other programmes, leaving behind a lasting legacy that continues to benefit the people of the country, Saikia said. He further noted that Vajpayee’s life represented an exceptional example of dedicated public service, national development, democratic values and principled politics.
His enduring ideals, visionary outlook and unwavering patriotism, Saikia said, would continue to inspire generations to walk the path of service to the nation. The programme concluded with party functionaries paying their respects through slogans including “Atal Bihari Vajpayee Amar Rahe,” “Vande Mataram” and “Bharat Mata Ki Jai.”
