A State-level consultative meeting on the conservation plan of the Ratey Chu watershed was convened at Tashiling Secretariat under the chairmanship of the Chief Secretary, R. Telang.
The meeting was coordinated by the Forest & Environment Department and attended by representatives from various line departments, scientific institutions and the Border Roads Organisation (BRO).
The primary agenda of the meeting was to prepare a comprehensive conservation plan for the Ratey Chu watershed, the vital source of drinking water for Gangtok town.
Presentations were made by the Forest Department, GB Pant Institute (GBPNIHE), PHE Department and DAC Gangtok, highlighting key issues and ongoing initiatives in watershed management.
The Chief Secretary commended the efforts already underway, particularly those supported by field data and emphasised the need for a micro-level, future-oriented conservation plan.
He stressed that the plan must incorporate public participation and awareness-building on water conservation across the State.
Underscoring the urgency of the matter, the Chief Secretary directed the departments to closely monitor progress with measurable indicators. He further instructed the departments and institutions to pool technical expertise, knowledge and machinery to address the challenges effectively.
