Insurgent groups NSCN (K-YA) and the Revolutionary People’s Front (RPF) have claimed responsibility for an ambush on an Assam Rifles patrol in Arunachal Pradesh’s Changlang district that left one jawan dead and four others injured.
The ambush took place at around 6.30 am on September 29 along the India-Myanmar border, when an Assam Rifles patrol was moving through an area where border fencing work is currently under way, according to officials.
In a joint statement, the two outfits claimed that they carried out the attack targeting personnel of the 21 Assam Rifles stationed near Nampong. The claim came as security forces intensified operations in the area following the incident.
The deceased personnel was identified as 42-year-old Havildar Jankhokai Kuki. Four other Assam Rifles personnel were injured in the ambush and were subsequently taken to a hospital for treatment. Their current condition was not immediately known.
The attack has led to increased security activity in the area, with security forces conducting operations to trace those responsible and strengthening security measures along the border.
Changlang Superintendent of Police Kirli Padu had confirmed on September 29 that security operations had been intensified following the incident.
The India-Myanmar border in Changlang district is considered a sensitive area because of the movement of insurgent groups in the region and across the international boundary.
