In a landmark milestone for the country’s alternative energy sector, Maruti Suzuki India has launched the Wagon R Flex Fuel, cementing its position as India’s first mass-market flex-fuel passenger vehicle. Unveiled at a high-profile event in New Delhi by Union Ministers Nitin Gadkari and Hardeep Singh Puri, the production-spec hatchback represents a significant leap forward in reducing crude oil imports and curbing urban air pollution.
Equipped with a modified 1.2-liter, four-cylinder K12N engine, the Wagon R Flex Fuel features an advanced Engine Control Unit (ECU) alongside upgraded fuel lines and injectors designed to resist ethanol corrosion. Smart sensors instantly detect the exact fuel composition on the fly, allowing the hatchback to run seamlessly on any petrol-ethanol blend ranging from standard E20 up to E100 (pure ethanol). The vehicle is specifically homologated to comfortably handle higher commercial blends like E85, minimizing carbon emissions and near-zero particulate matter without compromising on everyday performance.
Initially aimed at commercial buyers and fleet operators to spearhead large-scale adoption, the roll-out coincides with the central government’s aggressive infrastructure expansion. While high-blend ethanol fuel is currently limited to approximately 100 dispensing locations across major metro corridors like Delhi-NCR and Mumbai-Nagpur, the Petroleum Ministry has committed to establishing 5,000 dedicated flex-fuel stations nationwide by the end of 2027. Auto industry experts view the debut of this flex-fuel pioneer as a win-win transition that transforms domestic agricultural surplus into clean mobility, successfully mapping a path toward total energy self-reliance
