Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on Wednesday inaugurated the vertically extended and refurbished Sikkim Guest House at Panjabari in Guwahati, marking the completion of its upgrade aimed at providing improved accommodation and enhanced convenience to the people of Sikkim visiting Assam.
The programme was also attended by the Minister for Buildings and Housing Department, Bhim Hang Limboo; MLA-cum-Advisor, Rikshal Dorjee Bhutia; MLA-cum-Advisor, Sanjeet Kharel; MLA-cum-Advisor, Delay Namgyal Barfungpa; Secretary, Home (Protocol), Benu Gurung; PCE-cum-Secretary, Buildings and Housing Department, C.V. Basnet; PCE, Buildings and Housing Department, Y.N. Gautam and senior officials of the Buildings and Housing Department.
The upgraded Guest House now comprises 20 rooms, including two VIP suites, along with a quarter block comprising five flat units and two dormitories. The facility is expected to serve as a comfortable “home away from home” for Sikkimese visitors, including students from the State pursuing their studies in Guwahati.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister appealed to all officials, guests and visitors to treat the Guest House as their own and ensure its proper upkeep and maintenance. He emphasised that collective responsibility and care would help preserve the facilities and ensure that they continue to benefit the people of Sikkim for years to come.
The Chief Minister also stressed the importance of serving Sikkimese cuisine at the Guest House, underscoring the need to bring a taste of home to Sikkimese people residing in or visiting Assam.
The refurbishment and vertical extension of the guest house and quarter building were undertaken to enhance accommodation and residential facilities. Both buildings were vertically extended by two floors each.
The project, which commenced in June 2022, was completed in August 2026. The original sanctioned cost was Rs 4.11 crore, while the revised sanctioned cost stood at Rs 6.61 crore. Additional works amounting to Rs 1.89 crore were also executed.
The Guest House building, originally measuring 659.89 square metres, now has a built-up area of 1,218 square metres. The quarter building, which originally had a built-up area of 724.85 square metres, now measures 1,315 square metres.
The upgraded facilities include a restaurant, pantry, guard room, lift lobby and lift, along with the existing accommodation and support facilities.
Additional work executed under the project includes the installation of a bore well, an aluminium water filtration tank with a capacity of 25,000 litres, paver blocks over the yard, fencing, a septic tank, a pump house and a DG set.
