Assam Police have seized around 80,000 Yaba tablets valued at approximately Rs 16 crore during an operation at Moynagarh in Cachar district, officials said on Monday.
The seizure was made on Sunday after police received specific information about the transportation of a large consignment of narcotics through the district. Acting on the information, a police team intercepted a luxury vehicle at Moynagarh and carried out a search.
During the search, officers allegedly found the Yaba tablets concealed inside a specially created hidden compartment in the vehicle. Police said the consignment had been transported from Mizoram through Cachar and was allegedly intended to be taken to another state.
The operation was conducted under the leadership of Cachar Senior Superintendent of Police Partha Protim Das.
Police arrested the driver, identified as Shamsul Hussain Laskar, on suspicion of his involvement in transporting the narcotics. He was taken into custody and is being questioned as investigators work to determine the source of the drugs and their intended destination.
Investigators are also examining the seized vehicle and other circumstances surrounding the transportation of the consignment. Police have launched a wider investigation to identify and trace the network allegedly involved in the interstate movement of the narcotics.
The recovery of approximately 80,000 Yaba tablets, with an estimated street value of Rs 16 crore, is one of the significant narcotics seizures reported in the region. Further details are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses.
