A collection of 197 ancient Dimasa coins, believed to originate from the reign of King Indra Pratap Narayan, has been discovered in Semkhor, a historic village in Dima Hasao district. Unearthed by a local woman while cultivating land, the coins were found in an earthen pot, suggesting they were intentionally buried centuries ago, marking a significant development in the region’s historical heritage.
Semkhor, one of the oldest Dimasa settlements in Dima Hasao, derives its name from the Dimasa words for salt and well, reflecting its historical significance linked to elite soldiers protecting a natural salt well. Recently, a woman returned a collection of coins to North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council Chief Executive Member Debolal Gorlosa, who donated them to the Archaeology Department of Dima Hasao for scientific study and preservation.
