Assam Chief Secretary Ravi Kota has directed all departments and agencies to speed up relief distribution and restoration work in flood-affected areas, with special focus on the worst-hit districts of Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat and Golaghat.The directions were issued during a review meeting on the state’s flood situation held on July 22, as heavy rainfall continued to worsen conditions in several parts of Assam.According to an official release, the Chief Secretary instructed all line departments to accelerate the repair and restoration of damaged infrastructure while ensuring the uninterrupted supply of relief materials and essential services to people staying in relief camps and affected villages.
Kota stressed the importance of close coordination among government departments to ensure timely assistance reaches those in need. He also called for a quick response to minimise the hardships being faced by flood-affected residents.The Chief Secretary further urged central agencies, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force, to intensify their support in restoring essential services and assisting with relief and rescue operations.The review comes as the flood situation remains serious across the state. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), more than 5.65 lakh people have been affected by the floods, with Sivasagar emerging as the worst-hit district. Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat are also among the severely affected districts.
The ASDMA reported 21 flood-related deaths on Tuesday, including 13 in Sivasagar, five in Charaideo, two in Golaghat and one in Jorhat. The fatalities had taken the flood-related death toll in Assam to 31 at the time of the review. In addition, one person lost their life due to urban flooding in Guwahati, while around 70 people were reported missing. Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for Wednesday, warning of adverse weather conditions across the state. A Yellow Alert has also been issued for the following four days, with forecasts of thunderstorms, lightning and heavy rainfall at isolated places.
