Ayi Ke Ekum, a pioneering senior day care centre located in Raneghat, East Siang district, celebrated a significant milestone this Wednesday as it completed three years of dedicated service to the elderly. Established on May 6, 2023, by a group of visionary and like-minded individuals, the centre has become a vital lifeline for senior citizens aged 70 and above, offering them a nurturing environment to thrive in their golden years.
The name “Ayi Ke Ekum,” which translates to “My Own Home,” reflects the core mission of the institution. Unlike traditional old-age homes for the destitute, this centre caters to elderly individuals from respectable families who often find themselves alone during the day. As family members go about their work and social lives, many seniors face the quiet burden of isolation. Ayi Ke Ekum steps in to fill this gap, providing a safe space where they can engage in social interaction, share life experiences, and regain a sense of belonging.
The third foundation day was commemorated with a vibrant programme at the Engo Takar Dere hall, attended by approximately 36 regular elderly members. During the event, the seniors expressed deep gratitude for the initiative, noting that the centre has significantly enhanced their emotional and social well-being. They highlighted how the facility allows them to age with dignity, ensuring they feel heard and valued by their community rather than being relegated to the periphery of social life.
However, the celebration also brought to light the pressing challenges facing the organization. While the centre’s impact has grown, it currently operates without a dedicated permanent building. During the anniversary gathering, members and beneficiaries alike emphasized the urgent need for permanent infrastructure to accommodate a growing number of seniors seeking companionship.
The management of Ayi Ke Ekum has issued an appeal to the public, non-governmental organizations, and well-wishers to support the establishment of a permanent structure. By securing a fixed home, the centre aims to expand its services and continue its mission of protecting the physical and emotional health of East Siang’s senior citizens. As it enters its fourth year, Ayi Ke Ekum remains a shining example of community-led social support, proving that empathy and companionship are the most effective remedies for the challenges of aging.
