Union Minister of State for Education and Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), Sukanta Majumdar, visited the Helen Lepcha Sikkim Government Medical College on Monday as part of his two-day official visit to Sikkim.
Upon his arrival at the institution, the Union Minister was received by PCE-cum-Secretary, Buildings and Housing Department, Chandra Vijay Basnet, PCE, Buildings and Housing Department, Y.N. Gautam and other senior officials of the Government of Sikkim along with the faculty members of the Helen Lepcha Sikkim Government Medical College.
During the visit, Majumdar took an overview of the medical college and its infrastructure. He was briefed on the facilities and various components of the campus by Dean, Helen Lepcha Sikkim Government Medical College, Bikram Kharga following which he interacted with the students from the first batch of the medical college.
The Helen Lepcha Sikkim Government Medical College, the first government medical college in the State, was virtually inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 28, 2026, marking a significant milestone in the development of medical education and healthcare infrastructure in Sikkim.
The campus comprises a comprehensive academic building as its central facility, supported by dedicated accommodation and residential infrastructure.
The institution also has sports and recreational facilities, including a Basketball Court, Volleyball Court, Gymnasium and Indoor Badminton Court.
The medical college has been named after Helen Lepcha (1902–1980), a noted freedom fighter from Sangmoo, Assangthang in present-day Namchi District. She actively participated in the Non-Cooperation Movement and the Quit India Movement and was awarded the Tamra Patra by the Government of India in 1972 in recognition of her contribution to the freedom struggle.
Majumdar’s visit to the institution formed part of his official programme in Sikkim, during which he visited projects under the Prime Minister’s Development Initiative for North Eastern Region (PM-DevINE), along with projects supported by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), North Eastern Council (NEC) and the State Government.
