Teesta Elephant Calf Rescue Team Honoured with Gaja Mitra Award During Wildlife Week 2026

The Wildlife Trust of India (WTI), in partnership with the Baikanthapur Forest Division and the Nature and Wildlife Association (NWA), celebrated Wildlife Week 2026 at the Nature Interpretation Centre, Bengal Safari, Siliguri, recognizing the remarkable efforts of those involved in the rescue of an elephant calf from the Teesta River last month.

Organised under WTI’s ‘Gaj Utsav’ campaign, the event honoured 24 individuals with the prestigious Gaja Mitra Award, including Forest Department personnel, local fishermen and the Teesta Barrage gateman, for their vital role in the successful rescue operation conducted on September 21.

The programme began with a welcome address by Baikanthapur DFO Mudit Kumar and was attended by Bengal Safari Director E. Vijay Kumar and NWA Secretary Anujit Basu. Speakers highlighted the importance of collaboration between government agencies, local communities and conservation organisations in protecting wildlife.

Among those felicitated were five fishermen whose timely intervention proved critical in saving the young elephant. One of the award recipients, Bablu Das, said he felt a responsibility to help the calf, which appeared to be searching for its mother. He expressed happiness over the successful rescue and gratitude for the recognition received.

The event also featured an interactive session on Human-Elephant Conflict (HEC), focusing on elephant behaviour, conflict mitigation and the importance of community involvement in promoting peaceful coexistence between humans and elephants.

WTI’s Manager and Head of Natural Heritage Campaigns, Saymanti B., said the rescue demonstrated how quick decisions, coordinated action and strict adherence to rescue protocols can lead to successful conservation outcomes. She noted that the collaboration between local boatmen, Forest Department staff and frontline personnel ensured the calf’s safe rescue and reunion with its family.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks from NWA Secretary Anujit Basu, who acknowledged the contributions of all stakeholders. The event served as a reminder that effective wildlife conservation depends on collective action, community participation and the dedication of frontline workers committed to protecting wildlife.
