Advanced fertility treatment helped a Siliguri couple in their 20s overcome severe male infertility and welcome their biological child, highlighting the growing role of specialised reproductive healthcare services in the region. Rahul, 27, and Anjali, 29, had been married for three-and-a-half years and had unsuccessfully tried to conceive for two years. Rahul was diagnosed with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, a hormonal condition that affected testosterone and sperm production and was associated with erectile dysfunction. His semen analysis showed azoospermia, with no sperm detected.
At Nova IVF Fertility, Siliguri, Rahul underwent monitored hormone therapy, lifestyle and nutritional support. His hormone levels and testosterone gradually improved and sperm production resumed, although the count remained insufficient for natural conception. The fertility team, led by Dr Satabdi Dey, subsequently performed Testicular Sperm Aspiration (TESA) to retrieve sperm directly from the testes. The retrieved sperm were used for Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) as part of IVF, resulting in successful embryo development and transfer. The couple subsequently received a positive pregnancy result and welcomed a healthy baby.
In Siliguri, the case underscores the expanding demand for specialised fertility services across North Bengal and neighbouring areas, with advanced procedures such as IVF, ICSI and sperm retrieval increasingly available closer to home.
Dr Dey said the case also underlined the importance of evaluating both partners when conception is delayed and identifying potentially treatable hormonal causes early.
