India’s EV registrations jump 52% in 2026 as Tata AIG flags insurance needs

India’s electric vehicle (EV) market registered 25.37 lakh vehicles between January and September 2026, marking a 51.9% year-on-year increase and surpassing the 23.57 lakh units registered during the whole of 2025, according to Vahan data. EVs accounted for 10.7% of new vehicle registrations, up from 8.6% a year earlier. September registrations rose 76.1% to 3,37,240 units. At the current pace, registrations could reach 33.8 lakh in 2026.

Against this backdrop, Tata AIG General Insurance Company Limited has urged EV owners to review their motor insurance policies as battery damage, specialised repairs and charging-related incidents present distinct risks.

A Kiran Kumar, Head of Motor Underwriting at Tata AIG, said the transition of EVs into the mainstream required vehicle owners to understand their changing protection needs.

The insurer advised customers to examine coverage for battery damage, charging equipment and accidental damage, alongside add-ons such as electric Surge Secure, battery convenience and wall charger protection, subject to policy terms, exclusions, deductibles and claim conditions.

The rising adoption of electric three-wheelers and commercial EVs has also increased the importance of fleet insurance, particularly in managing repair-related downtime and operational risks.

Tata AIG, a joint venture between the Tata Group and American International Group, commenced operations in India on January 22, 2001, and marks 25 years of service in 2026. Its network spans more than 262 locations.
