Choti Diwali Traditions: The Significance Behind Lighting 14 Diyas, Sacred Rituals, and Proper Placements

Observed on the Chaturdashi Tithi of the Hindu month of Kartik, Choti Diwali or Naraka Chaturdashi features the traditional lighting of 14 diyas that symbolises the illumination of the fourteen realms, prayers for prosperity, protection against premature death, and preparation for Goddess Lakshmi’s arrival, with each lamp carrying deep spiritual meaning to honor Lord Yama and celebrate Lord Krishna’s victory over the demon Narakasura, as sacred scriptures note that this specific number aligns with Vedic astrology where the primary diya is a four-wick mustard oil lamp dedicated to Yamraj, the God of Death, known as Yama Deepam and placed outside facing south to ward off sudden or premature death and bring peace to ancestral souls according to the Garuda Purna, while the remaining lamps represent Lord Krishna and Satyabhama vanquishing dark forces across the fourteen lokas after defeating Narakasura who held 16,000 women captive, serving simultaneously as an ultimate cleansing ritual that removes darkness and invites the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kubera, and because placement matters just as much as count, Vastu and scriptural guidelines dictate that these fourteen lamps should be strategically positioned in specific spots including the main entrance to welcome prosperity, the pooja room in front of idols for divine blessings, near the Tulsi plant to honor Goddess Vrinda and bring household peace, close to the drinking water storage in the kitchen to appease ancestors, by a banyan or peepal tree to show reverence to the Trimurti, at a nearby temple as an offering to the community deity, near the trash or outer washroom area to clear negative energies from unclean zones, on the rooftop or terrace to radiate positive light into the sky, across the veranda or courtyard to illuminate the heart of the home, on window sills to radiate warmth to passersby, on the staircase to ensure safe movement and energy flow across levels, at the workplace or study area to invoke Goddess Saraswati and Lord Ganesha for success, and near your safe or locker area to seek Lord Kuber’s protection.
