Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee will formally inform Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla about the entire incident of the brutal attack on him in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district. According to news agency ANI, citing party sources, the MP will also move court soon over the attack.
Notably, miscreants hurled bricks, stones, and eggs at Abhishek Banerjee while he was on his way to Sonapur to meet families affected by post-poll violence. The Trinamool Congress national general secretary sustained a serious injury near his eye in the incident. Alleging that the Bharatiya Janata Party was behind the attack, Banerjee said it was a pre-planned conspiracy to kill him and that the police had completely failed to provide him with adequate security.
Police have already arrested five people in connection with the attack. The accused have been identified as Akash Gayan, Kajal Das, Debashish Dutta, Nirmalya Sengupta, and Tapan Maity. They were produced before a court in Baruipur on Monday.
The incident has triggered an intense political conflict in West Bengal. According to the Trinamool Congress, such attacks have been systematically carried out targeting the party’s top leaders. Notably, last Sunday, another Trinamool Congress MP, Kalyan Banerjee, was also attacked near Chanditala police station in Hooghly district. While Kalyan Banerjee alleged that BJP supporters struck him on the head, the BJP rejected the claim and termed it an expression of local public anger against the TMC leader.
Meanwhile, Abhishek Banerjee described the attack on him as “political terrorism” sheltered by the BJP. Thanking Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his support during this crisis, he said on social media, “Opposition parties will always remain united to protect our democratic institutions and the dignity of the Constitution.”
On the other hand, the BJP has strongly condemned all such acts of violence. The party also clarified that the current situation has arisen due to years of public resentment against the Trinamool Congress.
