Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday highlighted the growing economic use of bamboo in the state, saying the sector is creating new opportunities for livelihoods, entrepreneurship and emerging industries.
Marking World Bamboo Day, Sarma said Assam’s bamboo resources were increasingly being used beyond traditional purposes, with applications ranging from everyday products to industrial activities.
“From everyday products to new industries, Assam’s bamboo is creating new opportunities for our people,” Sarma said in a post on X.
The Chief Minister said bamboo was helping drive skills, livelihoods and entrepreneurship while creating opportunities for sustainable economic growth across the state. His remarks come as Assam looks to expand the economic potential of bamboo and encourage greater use of the resource across different sectors.
Bamboo is being used in Assam for a range of products and activities, including handicrafts, furniture, construction materials, food products and other industrial applications. The wider use of bamboo is also creating scope for local enterprises and value-added products, providing opportunities for people involved in cultivation, processing, manufacturing and marketing.
The focus on bamboo also reflects efforts to promote sustainable economic activities by making greater use of a renewable natural resource available in the state. By developing skills and encouraging entrepreneurship around bamboo-based products, the sector can support livelihoods while creating opportunities for new businesses and industries.
World Bamboo Day is observed every year on September 18 to raise awareness about the importance of bamboo and promote its sustainable use. The day also seeks to highlight the economic, environmental and social potential of bamboo.
