The Assam government has released the first instalment of interim flood relief worth Rs 112 crore to support families affected by the recent floods, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Monday.Under the relief package, each eligible flood-affected household will receive Rs 15,000 as interim financial assistance. The first phase of the programme will cover more than 60,000 families across four of the worst-affected districts, while the total number of beneficiaries is expected to increase to around 75,000 as damage assessment continues.Announcing the decision, the Chief Minister said the government was extending immediate support to families that suffered losses during the floods and would continue identifying additional beneficiaries in the coming days. According to the district-wise distribution shared by the Chief Minister, more than 35,000 families in Sivasagar, over 19,000 families in Charaideo, more than 4,000 families in Jorhat and over 2,000 families in Golaghat will receive the interim assistance in the first phase.
“The government will continue assessing flood-hit areas and identifying additional affected families. More households may be included as the damage assessment progresses,” Sarma said.The Chief Minister also announced additional financial support for displaced families in Sivasagar and Charaideo who are still unable to return to their homes because of the flood situation.He said families in the two districts who continue to stay away from their homes until August 9 will receive an additional assistance of Rs 10,000 from August 10. The support is intended for people living in relief camps or temporary shelters after their homes were damaged or became uninhabitable due to the floods. Sarma further said that a comprehensive ground-level assessment of flood-related damage and casualties in Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat will begin from August 10. “Compensation and financial assistance will subsequently be released to eligible affected families in accordance with government norms,” he said.
The state government is expected to provide further relief based on the findings of the assessment, covering losses to houses, agriculture, livestock and other affected sectors. In a separate announcement, the Chief Minister said the Assam government has also released its share of subsidy under the *PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana*, a scheme that promotes rooftop solar installations to help households reduce electricity expenses. The latest announcements come as the state government continues relief, rehabilitation and restoration efforts in Upper Assam, where the recent floods caused widespread damage to homes, farmlands, livestock and public infrastructure. Officials said the assessment process will help ensure that eligible families receive financial assistance and compensation in accordance with existing government guidelines.
