The Assam government has formally renamed the ‘Mini Secretariat, Barak Valley’ as the ‘Assam Secretariat Barak Valley, Silchar’, following a decision taken by the state Cabinet to strengthen the administrative structure in the region.
A notification issued on August 21 brought the new name into effect immediately. The notification also laid down the framework for the functioning of various state government departments from the administrative establishment in Silchar.
As many as 32 out of the Assam government’s 59 departments are set to function from the Barak Valley arm of the Secretariat. The move is expected to improve administrative access and strengthen the delivery of government services in the Barak Valley region.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had announced the decision on August 18 following a meeting of the Assam Cabinet.
“We have also taken a decision concerning the administrative setup in the Barak Valley. The mini secretariat established in the region will now be officially known as the Assam Secretariat, Barak Valley,” Sarma had said while announcing the Cabinet decision.
The Cabinet also approved the standard operating procedures and guidelines for the functioning of government departments from the Assam Secretariat Barak Valley in Silchar.
“We have presented all the SOPs and guidelines,” the Chief Minister said.
The decision means that a significant number of state government departments will have an operational presence in Silchar, allowing administrative work related to the Barak Valley to be handled more closely from the region.
The government has maintained that the move is part of its broader effort to strengthen governance and administrative mechanisms outside the state capital and improve access to government services for people living in different parts of Assam.
The formal renaming of the establishment from the ‘Mini Secretariat, Barak Valley’ to the ‘Assam Secretariat Barak Valley, Silchar’ also reflects a change in its administrative status and role.
With 32 departments expected to operate from the Silchar-based Secretariat, the government aims to create a stronger administrative setup for the Barak Valley and support faster coordination and implementation of development-related work in the region.
The decision was taken by the Assam Cabinet and subsequently formalised through the August 21 notification, which came into force with immediate effect.
