The Second Quarter Drug Disposal was conducted at New STNMH, Sokeythang, Gangtok on Thursday under the supervision of the District NCORD Committee, following due Court authorisation and permission and clearance from the State Pollution Control Board-Sikkim (SPCB-Sikkim) for the safe disposal of the seized substances through authorised facilities.
The disposal involved seized narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances pertaining to cases that had been disposed of by the competent Court.
The substances included 17,446 capsules of Spasm Proxyvon, 1,048 tablets of Nitrosun-10, 401 bottles of cough syrup (100 ml each), and 100.16 grams of brown sugar.
In accordance with the prescribed disposal procedures and the permission granted by the SPCB-Sikkim, the 401 bottles of cough syrup were disposed of through the authorised Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP), while the capsules and tablets and brown sugar were destroyed through a thermal incinerator within the premises of STNM, Sokeythang.
Prior to disposal, the seized substances were duly verified against the corresponding seizure and case records and cross-checked with the relevant Court orders. The entire process was carried out in accordance with the prescribed legal, procedural and environmental requirements, with necessary documentation, verification and safeguards maintained to ensure transparency and accountability.
The proceedings were conducted in the presence of SSP Gangtok Dr Tshering N Gyatso; ASP Gangtok, Prawin Lamichaney; SDPO Gangtok, Mingyur T Nadik; SDM (HQ), C S Limboo; DIO Gangtok, Dependra Sharma; and Drug Inspector, Health and Family Welfare Department, Pankaj Dhakal, along with two independent witnesses.
The disposal was undertaken in accordance with the applicable provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, the Sikkim Anti-Drugs Act, 2006, and the prescribed guidelines governing the disposal of seized narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, following due Court authorisation and environmental permission from the SPCB-Sikkim.
The exercise forms part of the continued efforts under the National Coordination Committee for Combating Illicit Trafficking in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NCORD) framework to ensure the safe, systematic and accountable disposal of seized substances and to strengthen coordinated action against illicit drug trafficking and drug abuse in the State.
