Two suspected vehicle thieves were killed in a police encounter at Markadola under Sonapur Police Station in Assam’s Kamrup Metropolitan district in the early hours of Thursday following a chase over an allegedly stolen vehicle from the Panbazar area of Guwahati. According to preliminary information, police were pursuing a vehicle bearing registration number AS-01-KC-3128, which was allegedly stolen from the vicinity of Panbazar Police Station.
The chase continued towards the Sonapur area before the vehicle was intercepted at Markadola. Police said the suspects allegedly opened fire at the pursuing police team during the operation. An exchange of fire followed, in which two persons identified as Saidul Alam Laskar and Babul Singh were killed. The police have reportedly recovered two pistols, mobile phones and other materials from the possession of the deceased. The recovered items are suspected to be linked to the alleged vehicle theft, although the investigation is still underway.
The bodies of the two men have been kept at Sonapur District Hospital for further procedures. Police have launched an investigation into the incident, including the circumstances surrounding the alleged firing by the suspects and the subsequent exchange of gunfire. Officials are also examining the alleged vehicle theft and the involvement of the two deceased persons in other possible cases.
