VVS Laxman could be handed a major new responsibility in Indian cricket administration. According to reports that emerged on Friday, August 14, the former India batter is in line to become the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Director of Cricket. However, the board has not made any official announcement yet, and the exact scope of the proposed role is still unclear.
Laxman is currently heading the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, which plays a key role in developing India’s cricketing talent. The board is reportedly considering elevating him to a newly created oversight position, which would give him a wider role in Indian cricket administration.
Since retiring from international cricket, Laxman has built considerable experience in coaching and administration. One of his notable assignments came when he led a young Indian team during the T20I series against Zimbabwe. With head coach Gautam Gambhir and the regular support staff rested after the England tour, Laxman took charge of the side, which went on to win the series 3-0.
His major contribution in recent years has come through the Centre of Excellence, where he has been involved in developing India’s cricket pipeline. In 2024, Laxman was reportedly considered for the India head coach position after Rahul Dravid’s tenure ended. However, he chose to continue in his existing role with the BCCI.
If the proposed Director of Cricket position goes ahead, Laxman would take on a more senior oversight role within Indian cricket. However, the board is yet to clarify exactly what responsibilities would come under the new position.
There are also questions over the relationship between the proposed Director of Cricket role and the existing selection committee. It remains unclear whether Laxman would operate above the selection committee as a separate administrative authority or take over some of the responsibilities currently handled by chief selector Ajit Agarkar.
The BCCI has also not clarified how Laxman’s potential appointment could affect Agarkar’s position, including the possibility of his tenure being extended until June 2027. The exact structure and reporting relationship between the two roles have not yet been revealed.
