Assam Floods: Congress Seeks PM Visit, ₹10 Lakh Ex Gratia

The Congress on Wednesday appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to visit the flood-affected areas of Assam, saying the state was facing a serious humanitarian crisis as the death toll from this year’s floods climbed to 75. Addressing the media, Congress MLA Joy Prakash Das expressed concern over the worsening flood situation and said the number of casualties was continuing to increase. He warned that the situation could deteriorate further if timely relief and rehabilitation measures were not strengthened. Describing the floods as a major humanitarian disaster, Das said the growing loss of lives was deeply painful and called on both the Assam government and the Centre to step up their response. He urged the state government to provide an ex gratia of *Rs 10 lakh* to the family of every person who lost their life in the floods.

“The death toll has reached 75 and is still increasing. This is a very unfortunate situation, and stronger relief measures are needed to support the affected people,” Das said while addressing reporters. In a gesture of support for relief and rehabilitation efforts, the Congress legislator announced that all Congress MLAs in Assam would donate their previous month’s salaries to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. He said the contribution was intended to assist the ongoing relief work and help people affected by the floods rebuild their lives. Das also sought greater involvement from the Central government in tackling the crisis. He urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to personally visit the flood-hit districts to assess the situation on the ground and understand the difficulties being faced by thousands of affected families.

He said a visit by the country’s top leadership would help draw greater attention to the challenges confronting the state and ensure that adequate assistance reached those in need. According to Das, Assam requires sustained support from both the state and the Centre to effectively manage the humanitarian crisis and speed up relief, rehabilitation and recovery efforts in the flood-affected regions.
