Hanging gardens planned for Guwahati flyovers as Assam sees limited flood impact

The Assam government is planning to develop hanging gardens on flyovers across Guwahati as part of its efforts to improve the city’s appearance and create greener public spaces, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Thursday.Speaking during a Facebook Live session, Sarma said the proposed hanging gardens are aimed at beautifying Guwahati’s growing network of flyovers while adding more greenery to the city’s urban infrastructure. He said the initiative is part of the government’s broader vision to make the state capital cleaner, more attractive and environmentally friendly. According to the chief minister, the project is intended to improve the overall urban landscape by making better use of existing public infrastructure. The hanging gardens are expected to enhance the visual appeal of flyovers while promoting green spaces in one of the state’s fastest-growing cities.

“The initiative is part of our continued efforts to improve the city’s aesthetic appeal and create a cleaner and more sustainable urban environment,” Sarma said during the online interaction. Apart from outlining the government’s urban development plans, the chief minister also reviewed the current flood situation in Assam during the live session. He said the state has so far remained largely free from severe flooding this monsoon, unlike previous years when widespread inundation affected several districts. Sarma said only parts of Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts are still facing flood-related difficulties. He assured that the state government is providing all necessary relief and assistance to people affected by the floods.

“The government stands firmly with the affected people and is ensuring that all required assistance reaches them,” he said. The chief minister added that the administration is keeping a close watch on the flood situation and is prepared to respond quickly if conditions change. At the same time, the government remains focused on carrying forward long-term infrastructure development and urban improvement projects across Assam.
