Missing Assam man’s decomposed body recovered from Meghalaya stream, family seeks probe

The highly decomposed body of a 31-year-old man from Assam, who had been missing since September 18, was recovered from a stream in Meghalaya’s West Khasi Hills district, with his family seeking an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

The deceased has been identified as Binod Chetry, a resident of Lower Lampi in Assam’s Kamrup district. His body was recovered on September 29 from a stream at Pyndensohstap village after the village headman informed Meghalaya Police about the discovery of an unidentified male body.

Following the information, a police team from the Langpih Border Outpost reached the location and recovered the body. A mobile crime scene team was subsequently called to the spot, and an inquest was conducted in the presence of independent witnesses.

According to police, the body was in an advanced stage of decomposition and was found submerged and floating among boulders in the river. A tattoo bearing the name “Rahul” was also noticed on the chest region, which was among the identifying features recorded during the preliminary investigation.

After the initial formalities were completed, the body was shifted to Civil Hospital, Nongstoin, for post-mortem examination. It was kept in custody at the hospital while efforts were made to establish the identity of the deceased.

The body was later identified by Binod’s father, Mukul Chetry, who confirmed that it was his son. Police said that after the post-mortem examination and completion of the required formalities, the body was handed over to his father in the presence of independent witnesses.

Binod had reportedly gone missing from Lower Lampi on September 18. His father said Binod had a history of alcohol consumption and would sometimes leave home without informing family members about his whereabouts.

However, the recovery of his body in Meghalaya has raised questions for the family about the circumstances in which he disappeared and subsequently died. The family has reportedly lodged a complaint at Boko Police Station in Assam, seeking a detailed investigation into the matter.

The recovery has also caused concern among residents living along the Assam-Meghalaya border. While the police have completed the initial procedures, further details about Binod’s movements before his disappearance and the circumstances leading to his death are awaited.
