North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (NBMCH) in Susrutanagar, Siliguri, has expanded its patient-care infrastructure with the launch of an indoor de-addiction centre and additional psychiatry beds. The new facility, inaugurated virtually by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, has 40 beds, including 10 dedicated to de-addiction treatment and 30 for psychiatric patients. The addiction-treatment beds are equally divided between male and female patients. Previously, NBMCH provided de-addiction services only through its outpatient department, making prolonged treatment and regular medical supervision difficult for some patients. The dedicated inpatient facility is expected to support closer monitoring, treatment of associated mental health conditions and rehabilitation. The psychiatry department has also received 10 additional beds in its main indoor ward, increasing its capacity to provide specialised and longer-term care. Alongside healthcare services, the hospital is working to improve implementation of the ABHA digital health account system, with ASHA workers expected to conduct awareness campaigns and hospital staff to receive training to assist patients. The state health department has also approved separate hostels for male and female medical students, with the West Bengal Medical Services Corporation Limited tasked with advancing the infrastructure work. NBMCH Principal Sujoy Mistry said the initiatives are aimed at strengthening the institution’s infrastructure and improving services for both patients and students.
