Rescue operations are underway to evacuate 25 workers trapped inside an under-construction tunnel of the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation Limited (NHPC) Teesta Stage VI Hydroelectric Project at Samardung, Jholungey in Namchi District of Sikkim.
The operation is currently being carried out by the Namchi District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force( NDRF) 2nd Battalion Pakyong and Siliguri, and other concerned agencies, which have been deployed to the site to conduct search and rescue efforts.
As per the information received from the General Manager, NHPC ltd /Teesta VI Hydropower Project, 25 workers including the officials of the Hydro Project are trapped inside the ADIT-3 tunnel of the Hydro Project.
Of these, two fatalities have been reported, while rescue operations are still underway to evacuate the remaining workers trapped inside the tunnel.
Meanwhile, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang said he was deeply saddened by the tragic incident at the under-construction tunnel of the NHPC Teesta Stage VI Hydroelectric Project at Samardung, Jholungey, in Namchi District.
“My heartfelt condolences go to the families of the workers who have lost their lives. In this hour of grief, the thoughts and prayers of the entire State are with the bereaved families, and we stand firmly by them during this difficult time,” Tamang said.
“I am closely monitoring the ongoing rescue operations. Teams from the District Administration, SSDMA, Sikkim Police, SDRF, Fire and Emergency Services, Pakyong and Siliguri NDRF, and other specialised agencies are working tirelessly to evacuate the bodies of the remaining workers trapped inside the tunnel. I appreciate the dedication and courage of all personnel involved in this challenging rescue mission,” he said.
The Chief Minister directed all concerned authorities to extend every possible assistance, expedite the rescue efforts, and ensure that the highest standards of safety are strictly followed throughout the operation.
He further appealed to everyone to remain calm, avoid spreading unverified information, and keep the affected workers and their families in our prayers.
