Mizoram is still dealing with the effects of bad weather. Heavy rain, strong winds, and landslides have caused a lot of damage in the state over the past two days. The state Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Department says that at least 77 homes have been damaged since the bad weather started on Monday. Four of those homes were completely destroyed. Mizoram is currently reeling from the impact of severe weather as heavy rainfall, powerful windstorms, and landslides have caused widespread destruction across the state over the past two days. According to the state Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Department, at least 77 houses have been damaged since the onset of the extreme weather on Monday, with four of those homes completely destroyed.
The storms have effects that go far beyond homes. Reports from the government say that a lot of public infrastructure has also been damaged. The windstorms have damaged two school buildings, a few church halls, health subcenters, an Anganwadi center, and a public library. Even though there was a lot of damage, officials have confirmed that no one has died during this time.
Damage has mostly happened in four districts, with Aizawl and Lunglei being the worst hit. Windstorms damaged 39 houses in Aizawl, and 31 houses in Lunglei, which is in the south, were damaged by both windstorms and landslides. There were also reports of minor damage in other parts of the state, such as the Siaha and Kolasib districts.
The state government ordered all schools in nine districts, including Aizawl, Kolasib, Lunglei, and Mamit, to close on Tuesday because the weather was getting worse and to keep students safe. The precaution was taken because the heavy rain kept making landslides and rockfalls more likely.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) says that the situation is very bad, with Aizawl getting 57.8 mm of rain on Tuesday alone. Mamit (47.5 mm), Khawzawl (35.5 mm), and Serchhip (34.5 mm) also had a lot of rain. The IMD has issued a strong warning for the next three days, saying that Aizawl, Kolasib, Mamit, Champhai, and Serchhip districts will see heavy to very heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning. Also, officials have warned that Kolasib will have gusty winds of 50 to 60 km/h on Wednesday and Aizawl will have them on Thursday, so people should stay alert.
