Vodafone Idea shares upgrade 8% on hopes of AGR relief

Vodafone Idea shares jumped over 8% to 7.6 per share during intraday session on NSE on Monday, August 25. After closing with a 7% gain in the previous session on Friday, it closed 4.6% higher at 7.4 per share on the stock exchange.

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has received an informal note from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) proposing several relief options for the debt-ridden telco (Vi), Livemint reported citing people familiar with the matter. Following this, the company’s shares rose 10% in intraday trade on Friday. The stock’s two-day gain was 16%.

Vodafone Idea’s AGR payment

Vodafone Idea owes around 83,400 crore in adjusted gross revenue (AGR), and the annual payment is currently 18,000 crore, which is due starting March 2026. Including interest and penalty, Vodafone Idea’s dues are more than 2 lakh crore.

According to experts, the collapse of Vodafone Idea will leave India with two major players in the telecom market, dominated by Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel.

According to the report, one of the relief options is an additional two-year pause on payment of statutory dues currently under moratorium. The report said the telecom department has proposed giving the company additional time to pay the dues, as well as a waiver of penalty and interest on lower annual payment and AGR payment.

During the June quarter earnings call on August 18, outgoing CEO Akshay Mundra said that talks with lenders were on hold due to uncertainty over adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues.

Debt-laden Vodafone Idea is now looking to raise funds from non-bank sources as banks turn cautious on lending.
