Vivek Oberoi says he vowed to stay single forever after heartbreak: ‘When you are innocent but you are abused’

Vivek Oberoi opened up about his personal experiences and the lessons he learned from heartbreak.

“I have experienced a lot of heartbreak and it is a peculiar journey,” Vivek Oberoi said while sharing advice on how to deal with breakups. The Saathiya actor, who went through several high-profile relationships before marrying Priyanka Alva Oberoi in 2010, recently opened up about his personal experiences and the lessons he learned. In a candid chat with MensXP, he discussed how heartbreak changed him and advised against taking extreme measures like vowing to stay single forever.

During the conversation, Vivek shared tips for young men to deal with heartbreak, drawing from his own experience. He explained how boys usually deal with heartbreak, which often involves feeling betrayed, meeting friends to drink alcohol and venting out their frustrations by criticising their ex-lover, with friends also joining in to make them feel better.

He added that some boys go as far as vowing to stay away from serious relationships altogether, deciding to stay single forever. “Some guys go the opposite – they decide to date every girl that comes their way and vow never to have a serious relationship because it hurts them too much,” Vivek explained. However, he pointed out that these approaches are misguided as they distance the person from their real self. “This girl left you, and you let her take your sense of self with you. That’s wrong. She rejected you, but you haven’t rejected yourself. You need to work on yourself.

Of course, expressing your feelings is important, but dating a bunch of girls, which I think Bollywood is also partly responsible for.” Vivek emphasised the importance of reflecting on a relationship to recognise one’s mistakes and avoid them in future relationships. He also advised caution in cases of abuse or betrayal. “If it wasn’t your fault and you were simply innocent but you were used or abused, it is important to protect yourself. Don’t give so much to someone unless you are sure that the person is worth it,” he said.

Sharing his personal experience, Vivek admitted to losing himself after a heartbreak. “We often focus on the emotional reaction rather than the healing process. My emotional reaction lasted for 4-5 years. It was difficult until I found Priyanka. I was stuck in a negative mindset, convinced that I would be alone for the rest of my life. I forgot who I really was – a person who was devoted in love. I changed myself and was punishing myself,” he revealed.

Vivek was previously in a relationship with Aishwarya Rai. Their romance began shortly after Aishwarya ended her relationship with Salman Khan. However, their relationship did not last long and they separated in 2003.
