Various durga puja pandals in West Bengal seek justice through art

This year’s Durga Puja celebrations in West Bengal are focused on justice for a 31-year-old trainee doctor who was brutally raped and murdered at RG Kar Hospital. On Wednesday, as the state commemorated Mahalaya, RG KAR students unveiled a sculpture of the victim, saying it will serve as a reminder of the heinous crime. Dr. Aniketh Mahato told the media that they wanted to be reminded of this pain every day so that such an incident would never occur again. Furthermore, he stated that this festival season is all about protests.

The incident has had an impact on pandals all over the state. While some have refused the state government’s Rs 85,000 compensation, others have displayed spinal models to emphasize the need of society taking a stand against such atrocities. Puja organisers in Baguihati have offered special VIP credentials for doctors who protested for justice.
