UNEP Report Urges Shift from GDP to Natural Capital

The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) released its Global Environment Outlook (GEO-7) report, arguing that continued focus on Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth is ecologically destructive. The comprehensive assessment found that transforming five key systems—energy, food, materials, economy, and environment—by investing in planetary health could yield global macroeconomic benefits of up to US$20 trillion per year by 2070. The report strongly recommends moving away from GDP as the primary indicator to measures that track human and natural capital to incentivize circular, sustainable economies.
