UK Universities See 15% Drop in Indian Student Applications

UK universities are reporting a significant drop in applications from Indian and Bangladeshi students for the September 2025 intake. A 15% decline has been attributed largely to recent changes in visa policies that restrict dependents from accompanying international students.

The UK Home Office introduced the measure earlier this year as part of efforts to curb immigration numbers. However, critics argue it disproportionately affects South Asian families, many of whom rely on close family support during study abroad programs. British education bodies have called on the government to reconsider the rules, warning that the UK may lose its position as a top destination for international students.

Private education consultants in Dhaka and Delhi are already seeing a shift in interest toward Canada and Australia. Bangladeshi and Indian students, who together make up a major share of the UK’s non-EU student population, are now exploring more welcoming alternatives.
