Thiruvananthapuram poised to replace Bengaluru as 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup venue

The forthcoming 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup, which is scheduled to take place from September 30 to November 2, is anticipated to be held at Thiruvananthapuram’s Greenfield International Stadium rather than Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. According to people with knowledge of the situation, the Karnataka government has decided not to allow games to be held at the stadium because of severe safety concerns about any activity there following the stampede on June 4. As a result, the Women’s ODI World Cup matches that were scheduled there will now take place in Thiruvananthapuram.

“Yes, it has been discovered that the World Cup games will now be held in Thiruvananthapuram, which is also a perfect location given the weather and its close proximity to Colombo, as approvals for hosting the games in Bengaluru have not arrived in time. It will shortly be formally announced by the ICC”, according to further sources. Since the stampede outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4 during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s celebrations of their IPL 2025 triumph, there has been ongoing uncertainty over future games that would be played there.

The M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, India, was found unsafe for hosting large-scale events due to its design and structure. The Justice John Michael D’Cunha Commission found the stadium unsafe for mass gatherings and warned of risks to public safety and emergency preparedness. The KSCA had to shift Maharaja T20 Trophy games to Wadeyar Ground in Mysuru and Alur hosted Maharani T20 competition matches. The Greenfield International Stadium has hosted four men’s T20Is and two ODI games.
