The center has allocated Rs. 1,190 crore for the New Teesta River Bridge in North Bengal

Darjeeling MP Raju Bista declared that the Central government has approved Rs. 1,190 crore for a new bridge across the Teesta River, which would be a significant piece of infrastructure for North Bengal. The deteriorated Coronation Bridge, which endured years of neglect and corrosion, is expected to be replaced by the new bridge. The project will cover the distance between Ellenbari and Sevoke in Darjeeling, totaling 6.85 kilometers.

It is likely that this infrastructure development will enhance connection between key regions, including the Dooars region, Kalimpong, Sikkim, Siliguri, and Darjeeling. MP Raju Bista has voiced concerns about the state of the Coronation Bridge during the current Parliament session and has asked for an update on the replacement’s development. In response, Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, has explained that the new bridge’s DPR is nearing the last approval step. The project will be finished in 36 months after approval.

Built in 1937, the Coronation Bridge has sustained significant damage, primarily from the 2011 and 2015 earthquakes. The West Bengal Public Works Department hasn’t done any significant repairs despite its dire situation. By lowering travel times by 14 kilometers and enhancing safety for commuters, businesspeople, and visitors, the new bridge is anticipated to revolutionize transportation in North Bengal.
