On Day 8, the box office collection of Ayushmann Khurrana’s Diwali release Thamma improved significantly, earning Rs 5.5 crore, a 27.9% increase from its disappointing first Monday. Directed by Aditya Sarpotdar and featuring Rashmika Mandanna, Paresh Rawal, and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, the horror-comedy appears to have stabilized after its initial decline.
Thamma has surpassed the Rs 100 crore mark, achieving a total domestic collection of Rs 101.1 crore after its first week at the box office. A key factor for its mid-week recovery was the Rs 99 ticket offer launched by producers, leading to increased attendance. The film’s occupancy improved over the days, starting at 7.87% in the morning, reaching 20.29% in the evening, and peaking at 29.59% during night shows on Day 8.
Delhi-NCR leads in cinema screen occupancy with 1,182 screens at around 20%, while Mumbai follows with 751 screens and 22% occupancy. Despite this recovery, the film ‘Thamma’ is underperforming compared to ‘Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat,’ which achieved 27.80% occupancy and Rs 4.35 crore in collections on its 8th day, benefiting from a smaller screen count and less promotional effort. ‘Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat’ shows stronger performance across both tier-1 and tier-2 cities, indicating sustained audience interest in contrast to ‘Thamma.’
Within the horror-comedy universe of Maddock Films, “Thamma” has not achieved the same level of success as “Stree 2,” which earned over Rs 100 crore in less than four days and approached the Rs 300 crore mark by its eighth day. However, “Thamma” has performed better than other notable releases this year, including Aamir Khan’s “Sitaare Zameen Par,” which grossed Rs 95.55 crore in eight days, and “Jolly LLB 3,” starring Akshay Kumar and Arshad Warsi, which earned Rs 77.75 crore during the same timeframe.
Thamma is currently facing significant challenges, primarily due to competition from Rishab Shetty’s Kantara: Chapter 1, which, despite being in its fourth week, continues to excel, nearing the Rs 600 crore milestone. Additionally, the anticipated re-release of S.S. Rajamouli’s Baahubali films as Baahubali: The Epic is expected to capture audience interest and potentially share screens, which could impact Thamma’s business adversely in the near future. Presently, the Ayushmann Khurrana-starring film has a considerable gap to close to recoup its reported budget of Rs 145 crore, and its performance in the second week will be crucial in determining its ability to maintain momentum amidst increasing competition.
