Taxpayers Get Extra Time as Income Tax Return Due Date Pushed Further

In a statement issued late Monday night, the CBDT announced that the income tax ITR filing deadline has been extended from September 15 to September 16.

ITR Filing Due Date Extended: In a late-night statement on Monday, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) extended the deadline for filing ITRs (income tax returns), providing relief to taxpayers.

The ITR filing deadline has been extended by one day to September 16, meaning that the last day to file is today.

In a statement issued late Monday night, the CBDT announced that the income tax ITR filing deadline has been extended from September 15 to September 16.

“The due date for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for AY 2025-26, which was originally due on July 31, 2025, has been extended to September 15, 2025.” The Central Board of Direct Taxes has decided to extend the due date for reporting these ITRs for the fiscal year 2025-26 from September 15th to September 16th, 2025,” the CBDT stated in a news statement.

The Income Tax Department’s official X handle also confirmed the news, noting that the ITR filing site was down from 12 a.m. until 2:30 a.m. on September 16.

“To enable changes in the utilities, the e- filing portal will remain in maintenance mode from 12:00 AM to 02:30AM on 16th September 2025,” according to the announcement.

Why did the Centre extend the ITR filing deadline?

The income tax ITR filing due date was extended after social media users complained about difficulties on the official income tax platform.

Since Saturday, September 14, taxpayers and chartered accountants have complained on social media about being unable to file ITRs due to difficulties with the official system.

Users reported a sluggish website and that the income tax interface was unavailable. They wanted an extension to the income tax ITR filing deadline.

“The current status of the Income Tax Portal is pathetically slow, glitchy, and nonfunctional. Taxpayers and professionals are helpless.

“The government should understand that taxpayers are also a vote bank!! They should not be taken for granted and left to the mercy of a non-functional income tax portal. The due date should be extended promptly because many taxpayers are still struggling,” commented CA Chrag Chauhan in a post on X.

Before extending the ITR filing deadline, the income tax administration announced that over 7.3 crore persons had filed their ITRs, a record-breaking performance.

“A record 7.3 crore+ ITRs have been filed by September 15th, 2025, beating last year’s 7.28 crore. “We sincerely thank taxpayers and professionals for their prompt compliance,” it stated in a statement on X.

The e-filing system experienced heavy traffic on Monday, the last day to file ITRs for the fiscal year 2025-26. In addition, Monday was the deadline for paying the second quarterly installment of advance tax for the current fiscal year.
