Sutume Kebede defends title, Stephen Kissa shines in Tata Steel Kolkata 25K

The Tata Steel World 25K Kolkata 2024 saw remarkable performances as Ethiopian Sutume Kebede retained her women’s title, while Ugandan Stephen Kissa upset defending champion Daniel Ebenyo in the men’s category. Indian elites also shone, with Gulveer Singh setting a new event record and Sanjeevani Jadhav securing another win in the women’s division.

Kebede, overcoming health challenges, finished in 1:19:17, outpacing Kenya’s Viola Chepngeno and Bahrain’s DesiJisa. Despite missing the course record, she expressed joy at defending her crown. In the men’s race, Kissa clocked 1:12:33, narrowly beating Ebenyo, who settled for second. Anthony Kipchirchir surprised with a bronze finish.

The Indian contingent delivered stellar results. Gulveer Singh set a new Indian best at 1:14:10, narrowly edging out Sawan Barwal, while Gaurav Mathur took third. Among Indian women, Sanjeevani Jadhav improved her personal best significantly, winning in 1:29:08. Lili Das and Kavita Yadav completed the podium.With over 20,500 participants, the event underscored its growing stature in global road racing. The runners celebrated the festive Kolkata atmosphere, leaving a lasting mark on the year’s athletic calendar.
