Social Media Firms Face Heavy Penalties

The UK government has passed its long-debated Online Safety Act, requiring tech companies to remove harmful content more swiftly or face billion-pound fines.

Platforms like Facebook, TikTok, and X (formerly Twitter) will need to police child exploitation material, cyberbullying, and extremist propaganda more aggressively. Digital Secretary Michelle Donelan said the law will “make Britain the safest place in the world to be online.”

Critics argue the law could limit free expression. But many parents and educators have welcomed the move, noting rising concerns about children’s online exposure.
