Siliguri, July 30: In its ongoing anti-encroachment drive, the Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) faced major hurdles while demolishing shops encroaching on roads and drains on Nivedita Road in Champasari.
According to reports, a demolition campaign had started in the vegetable market located in Champasari Mod area on Tuesday. On receiving the news of eviction, MMIC member and ward councilor Dilip Burman reached the spot and said that the vegetable market cannot be removed. After this, vegetable vendors of the area protested with TMC flags under the leadership of councilor Dilip Burman. As a result, the SMC could not proceed with the eviction process in the vegetable market.
Subsequently, the eviction drive moved to Nivedita Road, where illegal constructions and shops were demolished. MMIC Dilip Barman said the vegetable vendors in the market are residents of Ward 46 and stressed the need for rehabilitation plans before any further eviction.
