Smart Drones to Protect Bangladesh’s Rivers from Sand Theft

In a major environmental move, Bangladesh has deployed surveillance drones to monitor illegal sand mining in key river basins like the Padma and Jamuna. The drones, equipped with night vision and GPS tracking, will relay data to district administrations in real time.

Illegal sand extraction has become a threat to river ecosystems and local farming communities. The government says the new monitoring system will help regulate mining licenses and protect riverbanks from erosion.

Indian and Nepali authorities, facing similar issues along the Ganga and Koshi, are reportedly in talks with Bangladesh to learn from this technological intervention.
