In Gangtok, Sikkim, Badong Thansing Junior High School has started a life-changing project by converting underutilised waste land into productive farming. The devoted Headmaster Rosan Nepal spearheads the school’s ‘School Environment Day’ project, which is observed on the fifth of every month. Now in its fourteenth edition, this monthly event—which has the backing of both staff and students—is truly making a difference at the local level. The transformation of arid area next to the school into cultivated, lush land made this month’s “School Environment Day” more significant.
Local leaders including the Area Education Officer, Panchayat members, and parents joined the youngsters in the event, which was not just for the school community. In order to bring the land back to life, they worked together to plant seeds and use tools in practical activities. Many children were excited and smiling as they participated in this event, which was their first time using farming equipment and planting seeds. Teachers instilled an appreciation for nature in the kids by helping them comprehend the maintenance needed for crops and soil.
The school is transforming neglected land into a vibrant educational space for students, focusing on conserving nature and the life cycle of crops. The initiative aims to cultivate strong young minds and connect students with their roots. The school plans to plant seasonal crops for their mid-day meal program, fostering a direct link between farming practices and food. The initiative aims to foster a culture of care, action, and responsibility.
