On May 9, Sikkim Minister Ven. Sonam Lama visited the Nathula border post to try to raise the spirits of the soldiers stationed at one of India’s highest and most strategically significant sites. During his visit, Minister Lama received an update on the security situation at Nathula from the Commanding Officer, Col. Sanjeet Phougat. Col. Phougat also brought up the issue of the region’s lack of basic amenities for visitors, to which Minister Lama responded favorably and pledged his full support for their improvement. Minister Lama conveyed his sincere appreciation for the soldiers’ steadfast dedication and national service.
In recognition of the challenging circumstances the troops face, he gave out tea leaves and candies as a thank you. The minister then traveled to Thegu, where he met with Brigadier Amit Sharma to assess the situation there. Minister Lama received a comprehensive briefing on the operational and security status of the sites. He assured the people that every post on the Sikkim side of the border is still completely safe. Minister Lama gave tea leaves and candies to the soldiers at Thegu as an additional token of gratitude, expressing his sincere gratitude for their service.
