As part of the Government of India’s Rs 3295 crore commitment to enhance tourist destinations across 23 states, Sikkim is expected to benefit from two significant tourism infrastructure projects. By creating top-notch amenities and highlighting regional culture, these projects, which are supported by the Scheme of Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI), seek to increase tourism. One important project is the construction of a Skywalk at Bhaleydunga, Yangang, Namchi, which is situated in South Sikkim.
The glass-bottom Skywalk, which will be 240 meters long and 3,200 meters high, has a budget of Rs 97.37 crore. It will be reachable by a 3.5-kilometer ropeway, providing guests with expansive views of the Bhaleydunga Peak and the nearby Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary. In addition to creating 61 local jobs, the facility will contain a funicular and auxiliary services. The goal of this project is to establish Sikkim as a center for ecotourism. Rs 68.19 crore will be allocated to the second project, which would improve infrastructure at Nathula Pass, a crucial location on the India-China border.
By constructing parking lots, visitor centers, and recreational facilities, the project seeks to reduce traffic and enhance the traveler experience. In addition to supporting the increasing number of tourists visiting the area, this development will provide about 30 local jobs. It is anticipated that these investments will boost Sikkim’s tourism industry, increase the state’s allure as an ecotourism destination, and provide local populations with long-term economic prospects.
