Pay and Workload at Core of UK’s Largest Teacher Protest Since 2010

Teachers across England and Wales have launched a coordinated strike demanding better pay, reduced workload, and safer classroom environments. Organised by the National Education Union (NEU), nearly 200,000 educators are participating, resulting in mass school closures.

Union leaders argue that a decade of underfunding has led to unbearable class sizes and staff burnout. The UK Department for Education has urged teachers to resume talks but says budget constraints limit flexibility.

Countries like Bhutan and India, which are developing teacher training and retention programs, are observing the strike as a case study on balancing quality education and fiscal prudence in post-pandemic systems.
