Patients in Peril: NHS Backlogs Grow Amid Pay Disputes and Staff Shortages

The UK’s National Health Service (NHS) is in crisis, with over 7.6 million patients currently waiting for treatment — the longest list in its history. Junior doctors have announced a fresh wave of strikes over pay and working conditions, worsening the situation.

Hospitals in London, Birmingham, and Manchester have had to cancel thousands of non-emergency surgeries. General Practitioners (GPs) are also facing burnout.

Several doctors of South Asian origin, including many from India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, are among the NHS’s backbone, and are expressing concern about long-term staff morale. The British Medical Association has urged immediate government intervention.
