Siliguri, Jan 15: The Pradhan Nagar police have arrested a person for illegally extracting and smuggling sand from the Mahananda river near Gulma. The accused has been identified as Abhay Oraon, who was arrested during a police operation on Tuesday night.
According to information, the police had received information about illegal sand and stone mining in the area. Later, the officials seized two tractors and a truck involved in the illegal activity, while two other suspects managed to escape. The arrested accused was produced in the Siliguri court today and the police are actively searching for the absconding suspects.
Investigation is underway and further action will be taken against those involved in the illegal mining and smuggling operation.
